Enterovirus A71 Subgenotype B5, France, 2013
To the Editor: We report the detection of human enterovirus A71 (EV-A71) subgenotype B5 in France, 6 years after it was first detected in Europe. EV-A71 belongs to the Enterovirus A species (genus Enterovirus, family Picornaviridae) and is a major cause of hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD), sometimes associated with severe neurologic complications (1). EV-A71 strains are classified in 6 genot...

In the past two decades, coxsackievirus A16 (CV-A16) and enterovirus 71 (EV-A71) have been the predominant etiologic agents of herpangina (HA) and hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) epidemics [5-7]. Several other enterovirus serotypes frequently co-circulate with EV-A7...

Enterovirus A71 (EV-A71) infection has grown to become a serious threat to global public health. It is one of the major causes of hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) in infants and young children. EV-A71 can also infect the central nervous system (CNS) and induce diverse neurological complications, such as brainstem encephalitis, aseptic meningitis, and acute flaccid paralysis, or even death. ...

We have identified circulation of 3 genogroups of enterovirus (EV) A71 in India. A new genogroup (proposed designation G) was discovered during this study. We isolated genogroups D and G in wide geographic areas but detected subgenogroup C1 only in 1 focus in western India. A systematic nationwide search for EV-A71 is warranted.
